In a diplomatic stir, India reacted strongly on Thursday to US President Donald Trump's social media repost, which labeled India and other countries as 'hellholes' in an immigration debate. The remarks, derived from American radio host Michael Savage, accompanied a broader discourse on immigration and birthright citizenship in the US.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs, represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, deemed the repost 'uninformed' and 'inappropriate', not reflective of the 'mutual respect' underlining US-India relations. The US embassy swiftly sought to mitigate the backlash, affirming Trump's regard for India as a 'great' nation led by a 'good friend of mine'.
Despite the embassy's damage control efforts, the incident underscored the sensitivity of such characterizations. Michael Savage's initial comments highlighted perceived loopholes in US immigration laws, alleging they allow exploitation by immigrants from 'China or India or some other hellhole' arriving close to childbirth for citizenship benefits.
