Nepal's Customs Duty Alert: Impacts on India-Nepal Travel

Nepal is reportedly set to enforce a customs duty on goods carried by those crossing over from India, a move intended to regulate informal trade activities. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has entered discussions with Nepal to address these plans, according to spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

This prospective change, featured in reports and social media discussions, revolves around the enforcement of a pre-existing provision concerning goods valued over 100 Nepali rupees. However, assurances have been made that personal and household items will not incur this new charge, easing concerns for individual travelers.

The decision, according to Nepalese authorities, is rooted in controlling smuggling activities. Addressing apprehensions, Jaiswal emphasized that those transporting personal and household goods from India to Nepal shall remain unaffected by these developments, reaffirming diplomatic engagement to resolve any related issues.
