President Donald Trump has ordered the United States military to open fire on Iranian vessels placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil and gas trade. This came soon after the US seized another tanker implicated in Iranian oil smuggling.
The directive aims at intensifying US military's mine clearing operations in the region after Iran's Revolutionary Guards captured two cargo ships. The US Department of Defense released video evidence of the capture of the oil tanker Majestic X, originally bound for Zhoushan, China.
This tension has halted nearly all exports through the strait, driving up global gas prices. Prospects for peace remain dim, as recent ceasefire extensions have not led to renewed negotiations. Global economies brace for the sweeping impacts of this ongoing conflict.
