India's Ministry of External Affairs is actively coordinating with the family of Purnendu Tiwari, a former Indian naval officer detained in Qatar, to provide support amid complex legal proceedings. The ministry emphasized the judicial decision concerning Tiwari stems from multiple cases and urged not to conflate them.

Addressing reporters, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the case involving Commander Tiwari is distinct from another case where he recently received relief. Emphasizing this separation, Jaiswal noted that Tiwari is currently detained under a specific case ruled upon by Qatar's Court of Cassation in February 2026.

In previous interactions, MEA assured it is leveraging all diplomatic avenues and legal aid for detained Indian nationals. Among eight ex-Indian Navy personnel held since August 2022, only Tiwari remains, with Qatar's death sentence convictions against the group recently commuted. Diplomatic discussions between leaders of India and Qatar continue amidst these sensitive negotiations.
