VPP Demands Action on Immigration in Meghalaya
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) claims that Meghalaya lacks an official estimate of illegal immigrants and demands a 'foolproof mechanism' to detect and deport them. Unlike Assam, Meghalaya has not maintained any records on this issue, leading to doubts about their immigration policy's effectiveness and possible spillovers from Assam.

The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has raised concerns over the lack of official data on illegal immigrants in Meghalaya, following a public rally where they demanded robust measures for detection and deportation.
Party chief Ardent M Basaiawmoit indicated dissatisfaction with the government's current approach, stating that unlike Assam, Meghalaya has not undertaken any significant effort to estimate or manage the influx of illegal immigrants. The party stresses the need for stringent enforcement to prevent potential spillover effects from Assam.
The VPP plans further action, including a strategic march to the state secretariat and district-wide meetings. The rally also addressed issues with the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and highlighted unmet demands within the Khasi-Jaintia community.
