Diplomatic Standoff: U.S.-Brazil Credential Revocations Escalate Tensions
Brazil revoked the credentials of a U.S. immigration officer in response to the U.S. requesting a Brazilian security attache to leave. The move is linked to heightened tensions after the brief detention of a former Brazilian lawmaker in the U.S. without formal notice to the Brazilian authorities.
In a recent diplomatic move, Brazil's Federal Police revoked the credentials of a U.S. immigration officer based in Brasilia, mirroring an earlier request by the U.S. for a Brazilian counterpart to leave the United States. This announcement was made by both the police head and Brazil's foreign ministry on Wednesday.
Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues, in an interview with GloboNews, revealed that the attache returned to Brazil at his behest, only to face credential revocation. Rodrigues expressed regret over the situation, emphasizing that Brazil is not looking to expel any U.S. officers, despite the actions taken.
This escalating tension follows the U.S. ICE's brief detention of Brazil's former lawmaker Alexandre Ramagem, leading to Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hinting at possible reciprocal actions against perceived U.S. overreach.
