In a fierce political standoff, women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest at the Parliament House complex on Friday. Their demonstration followed the rejection of a Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at introducing women's reservation in legislatures, set to take effect from 2029.
The BJP members accused the opposition, spearheaded by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, of deliberately derailing the bill intended to bolster women's representation in the Lok Sabha. Union ministers, including Shobha Karandlaje and Raksha Khadse, voiced strong criticism, labeling the opposition's actions as an affront to women's empowerment and a betrayal of their political rights.
The protest underscored tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, with BJP's Kangana Ranaut condemning the situation as 'shameful.' She expressed deep disappointment over the bill's defeat, viewing it as a setback for Indian women aspiring for political engagement and empowerment.
