Women's Reservation Bill Defeated in Lok Sabha Amid Political Tensions

The Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at implementing women's reservation from the 2029 general elections faced a setback in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The bill was defeated as the opposition parties voted against it, preventing it from receiving the necessary two-thirds majority support.

During the voting process after a debate on the proposed legislation, a total of 298 members were in favor while 230 members opposed it. Speaker Om Birla announced the bill's failure to pass the mandatory threshold for constitutional amendments.

Following the outcome, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju indicated that the government would not pursue other related bills. Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the debate, criticizing opposition parties for their stance, warning that they might face electoral consequences in the future. (ANI)
