Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has accused the ruling BJP-led NDA government of employing a 'political ploy' with the introduction of the 2026 Women's Reservation and Delimitation Amendment bills. Sibal, speaking to ANI outside the Parliament, contends that these legislative efforts are aimed at securing a two-thirds majority in the 2029 General Elections to potentially 'alter' the Constitution.
Sibal criticized the government, stating that the proposed constitutional amendment bill, along with the delimitation and women's reservation changes, are strategically designed to mislead citizens. He suggested that the intentions of the Center might include gaining dominance in northern Indian seats while minimizing the impact of increased seats in the south, thus consolidating power to subsequently amend the Constitution.
The introduction of these contentious bills occurred during a three-day special parliamentary session. The Opposition voiced their discontent through a division voting process, where 251 AYES overtook 185 NOES out of 333 votes. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of this bill in shaping India's democratic legacy, highlighting the leadership's role in capitalizing on critical national moments.
