Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, a DMK candidate from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, described the party's black flag protest against the Centre's proposed delimitation exercise as essential on Thursday. Speaking to ANI, he emphasized the protest's importance and expressed confidence in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Panneerselvam said, "The DMK Alliance will secure a massive victory across the state. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's campaign has been very impactful." Earlier in the day, DMK workers and supporters staged demonstrations in Tiruchirappalli's Karumandapam area, wielding black flags in protest against the proposed delimitation exercise.
The protest attracted a large crowd, showcasing strong opposition to the delimitation bill by waving black flags as a symbol of dissent. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took dramatic action by burning a copy of the proposed delimitation bill, which ties representation changes to the 2011 census.
Stalin's symbolic gesture kicked off a statewide anti-delimitation movement. Campaigning in the Madurai East constituency, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin wore a black shirt to protest the bill, accusing the Union government of attempting to divert attention from elections with the delimitation agenda.
Opposition to the delimitation bill has been growing, particularly after the Centre's approval of draft amendment bills for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023. Critics also objected to the swift scheduling of a special Parliament session amid electoral tensions.
On the same day, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026 were introduced in the Lok Sabha. They were debated following a division of votes, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla setting a timetable for extensive discussions and a vote scheduled for Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for unanimous backing for the bills, but opposition parties remain vocal in their objections, particularly regarding the Delimitation Bill.
