The nomination process for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's mayoral election is expected to start this week, with April 23 set as the last date. Officials anticipate the election to occur on April 29, to fill the mayor, deputy mayor, and three vacant committee seats.
This election represents the fifth term of the mayoral rotational system, which began with a seat reserved for women, followed by various category terms. Last year, AAP abstained, aiding the BJP's unopposed win. AAP held both posts in the first three terms, but BJP's Raja Iqbal Singh claimed the mayoral seat in the fourth term after AAP's boycott.
This year's electoral college of 273 includes 249 councillors, 14 MLAs from the Delhi Assembly, seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha members. A minimum of 137 votes is required for victory. Currently, the BJP has a slight lead with 141 votes, while AAP holds 106.
