Governor's Criticism Sparks Economic and Political Tensions

In a significant political move, Governor Sardar Saleem Haider of Pakistan's Punjab province lashed out at some Muslim nations, accusing them of undermining Pakistan’s stability by supporting militant groups.

Speaking at an event in Gujrat district, Governor Haider criticized countries that back the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). His stern words underscore heightened regional tensions, especially considering the UAE's demand for a USD 3.5 billion loan repayment, which has amplified economic stress in Pakistan.

The UAE's decision not to roll over the debt has notably reduced Pakistan's foreign reserves, raising concerns over import coverage and compliance with the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) programme. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's commitment to deposit USD 3 billion into Pakistan's economy offers some respite amidst these challenges.
