Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has expressed support for women's reservation while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of sidelining backward class women with a hidden agenda. Yadav's remarks come ahead of Parliament's special session to discuss the women's reservation and delimitation bills.
Yadav, whose party holds the third-largest representation in the Lok Sabha, believes the BJP is avoiding a necessary caste-based census that would bring about significant changes in reservation policies. The BJP has been promoting awareness of the Women's Reservation Act, but Yadav claims their motivation is politically charged.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister has criticized the government's urgency, suggesting it's politically motivated to avoid a comprehensive census. He stresses the importance of engaging directly with affected women for meaningful policy implementation, citing economic and educational challenges faced by women.
