The European Union has made significant progress in its effort to protect children online with the introduction of a new age verification application for online platforms. President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the app is technically ready and will soon be accessible to the public.
This development is part of the EU's broader strategy to enforce regulations requiring social media platforms to restrict children's access. Von der Leyen emphasized the EU's commitment to holding online platforms accountable during a press conference in Brussels, alongside digital chief Henna Virkkunen.
Virkkunen highlighted that the application will serve as a powerful tool for parents, teachers, and caretakers, while a coordination mechanism will ensure consistent age verification across member states. The EU's plan is to ensure strict adherence to children's rights by online companies.
