Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred controversy by attacking Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury over her mother's alleged social media activity. Sarma claims that Chowdhury’s mother made posts seen as supportive of Pakistan, a move he argues offends 'Sanatani' sentiments.
Chowdhury's candidacy has gained attention as she competes against veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta in the Guwahati Central constituency. AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi criticized Sarma for resorting to Hindu-Muslim dialogue instead of addressing pressing electoral issues raised by Chowdhury, such as traffic congestion and land rights.
Chowdhury responded to the chief minister's allegations with irony, expressing gratitude for the unexpected publicity. She suggested that the allegations were evidence of fear among opponents as she gains political ground. Assam's assembly elections are set for April 9, with results announced on May 4.
