Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has formally challenged the proposed Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Bill, 2026. In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chidambaram criticized the bill for undermining the ‘command structures’ of the nation's paramilitary forces, noting his concern about its effect on morale and operational efficiency.
Chidambaram's criticism, shared on social media platform X, warned that the bill risks politicizing the forces and emphasized the need for career progression, institutional respect, and leadership based on experience. He disputed the reform label, describing it instead as institutional erosion. In his view, meaningful consultations with CAPF officers are crucial for comprehensive legislation.
The controversial bill, already cleared in the Rajya Sabha amid opposition protests, is set to be moved in the Lok Sabha by MoS Home Nityanand Rai. The bill mandates a significant portion of CAPF posts be filled through deputation, contrary to a 2025 Supreme Court judgment favoring a reduction of deputation posts. Opposition parties continue to criticize the timing and motive behind the bill's introduction.
