The Lok Sabha has approved a bill establishing Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. The legislation, which marks a significant political move spearheaded by the NDA and supported by the opposition Congress, seeks to thwart any future attempts to alter the capital's status.
The bill's passage is a major achievement for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, aligned with the ruling NDA coalition. Meanwhile, the YSR Congress Party, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, voiced strong opposition, arguing that the needs and compensation for farmers losing land must be addressed.
Historically, Andhra Pradesh considered having three capitals, a plan criticized as impractical. This legislative change aims to curtail such ideas, set to become effective on June 2, 2024, aiming for Amaravati to rise as a developed city akin to Bengaluru or Hyderabad.
