LPG Shortage Sparks Concerns Amid Ongoing Global Conflict

In a sharp rebuke of government policy, Congress General Secretary Avinash Pande highlighted the challenges arising from the current shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, a situation exacerbated by global tensions. Speaking to ANI, Pande expressed concerns over the economic impact on citizens.

Pande criticized the Finance Minister's assurances as market volatility persists due to the US-Iran-Israel conflict impacting crucial shipping lanes, notably the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for India's LPG imports. The Minister's assurances appear at odds with rising prices affecting household budgets.

The Indian government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure domestic LPG supply, diverting resources to this end. This decision, while maintaining household supply, places pressure on industries like hospitality. A new strategy to diversify energy imports aims to mitigate supply chain disruptions.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal echoed these concerns, commending the focus on household LPG supply but acknowledging the broad impact on industries. He underscored the necessity of prioritization amidst geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, domestic LPG production has reportedly increased, and new imports are anticipated to alleviate shortages.
