The Congress party has launched a sharp critique against the BJP-led government following the US's decision to permit India a temporary waiver to procure Russian oil. The opposition cast this waiver as a 'capitulation certificate' for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing it compromises India's sovereignty.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, stated the US has allowed India to tap into Russian oil stocks already en route at sea, asserting the temporary measure would not significantly benefit Russia financially. Despite the US describing India as 'good actors,' the Congress interpreted this as an affront to India's dignity.
The waiver emerges as part of efforts to alleviate oil supply disruptions during the ongoing geopolitical tensions with Iran. The US insists the measure will prevent oil price spikes globally without altering its stance on Russia. Nevertheless, Congress demands clarity from PM Modi on why external influences appear to guide India's energy decisions.
