Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) have moved from the edges of the financial world to become significant contributors to India’s capital markets. Addressing the IVCA Conclave 2026, held in Mumbai, Sebi Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey noted the importance of AIFs in channeling capital towards sectors most in need, amidst a challenging geopolitical backdrop.
Pandey highlighted that India’s AIF industry, with over 1,700 registered funds, has commitments nearing Rs 16 trillion as of December 2025, and actual investments of approximately Rs 6.45 trillion. He stressed that the scope exists for more investment in innovation-led sectors, as only Rs 205 billion has been channeled to startups by the end of 2025.
The Chairman warned against complacency in risk profiling, valuation integrity, and urged for more robust governance in the AIF industry. He revealed plans for a 'lodge and launch' regulatory model to streamline scheme approvals and noted a rise in accredited investors, key to fueling AIFs' future growth.
