The Lok Sabha witnessed a vigorous debate on Tuesday as opposition members pushed for a resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla, accusing him of bias in favor of the ruling party. Congress representative Mohammad Jawed spearheaded the motion, urging a reassessment of Birla's position.
Tensions rose when AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi challenged the decision to have Jagdambika Pal oversee the proceedings. His appointment, Owaisi argued, was a conflict due to being selected by Birla himself. However, BJP's Nishikant Dubey refuted these claims, citing the constitution and parliamentary protocols.
As the discussion unfolded, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed Owaisi's objections, affirming Pal's capability to lead. The measure required a show of support from 50 MPs to proceed. Gaurav Gogoi of Congress began leading the debate, kicking off the ten-hour allocated discussion period as questions persisted on procedural propriety.
