Trump Signs Temporary Spending Deal to End Shutdown and Begin New Immigration Talks
President Donald Trump signed a spending deal to end a partial government shutdown, restoring funding for various agencies and temporarily extending Homeland Security funding. The deal gives lawmakers time to negotiate immigration policy changes. It followed negotiations with Senate Democrats seeking reforms to Trump's aggressive immigration enforcement practices.
President Donald Trump signed a vital spending agreement on Tuesday, officially ending a partial U.S. government shutdown and securing temporary funding for key federal agencies. This move provides lawmakers with essential time to engage in discussions surrounding potential limitations on Trump's controversial immigration policies.
The newly enacted legislation reinstates funding for defense, healthcare, labor, education, and housing, while granting a temporary extension of financial resources to the Department of Homeland Security through February 13. Congress's inability to act timely led to a funding lapse that, so far, has not substantially hampered government operations.
The spending package passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support last week, followed by a narrow approval in the House of Representatives. It emerged from negotiations with Senate Democrats, who have demanded new restrictions on Trump's immigration enforcement, particularly after two U.S. citizens were killed by federal agents in Minneapolis. In response, Trump's administration began deploying body cameras on immigration officials in Minnesota, partially adhering to the Democrats' demands.
