A British man, John Ashby, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Birmingham Crown Court for the religiously aggravated rape of a Sikh woman in Walsall. The judge, condemning Ashby's actions, labeled him a 'deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe,' emphasizing the danger he poses to women.

The attack, driven by religious hatred, occurred last October and sent shockwaves through the West Midlands community. Evidence from CCTV footage, DNA fingerprints, and witness testimonies secured a robust case against Ashby, led by the Crown Prosecution Service in cooperation with West Midlands Police.

During the trial, it emerged that Ashby had targeted and attacked the victim in her home, following her from a bus stop. The victim, left traumatized and forced to relocate, stated she felt 'finally free' after Ashby's guilty plea. His life sentence includes a minimum term of 14 years before parole consideration.
