Operation Butler: A Treasure Trove of Art Seized in Portugal

In a dramatic development, Portuguese police revealed on Friday the seizure of 278 artworks purported to be the creations of masters like Picasso and Miro. This extensive collection was confiscated from a property in Portugal, with the late owner's former butler being scrutinized on suspicions of illegitimately attempting to sell the items.
The authorities have not filed any charges yet as the investigation, dubbed 'Operation Butler', continues to unfold. Key assistance is being provided by experts from the renowned National Museum Machado de Castro, aiming to authenticate the seized artworks reportedly owned by a deceased U.S. citizen who resided in Penalva do Castelo.
Among the evaluated pieces are works attributed to an impressive array of 27 artists, including revered figures like Albrecht Durer and David Hockney, alongside sculptures and various valuable artefacts. The outcome of these examinations could significantly influence the direction of the ongoing investigation.
