US Cracks Down on Southeast Asian Cyberscams as 'New Theatre of War'

In a major initiative targeting Southeast Asian cybercrime, US officials have announced a decisive crackdown on operations in the region. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro described this effort as a 'new theatre of war' against Chinese transnational organized crime, reflecting the Trump administration’s strategic focus on these illicit activities.

The crackdown, spearheaded by the US government’s Scam Centre Strike Force, has already led to significant actions such as the sanctioning of 29 individuals and entities, including a Cambodian senator. Two Chinese nationals, previously operating in Myanmar, face criminal charges amidst a multi-agency operation involving the FBI, DOJ, and US Secret Service.

Pirro highlighted the grave impact of these scams, which are often intertwined with human trafficking. The financial and legislative penalties aim to dismantle these networks. Notably, Cambodia passed a law imposing harsher penalties on scam operations, while also extraditing scam leaders to China, marking a regional shift towards stronger cybercrime laws.
