Justice Kant Calls for Cybercrime Reforms to Protect Digital Trust

In a significant address, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant highlighted the pressing need for the judiciary and law enforcement to adapt strategically to the evolving landscape of cybercrime. Speaking at the D P Kohli Memorial lecture, Justice Kant underscored the multifaceted threat that organized cybercriminal networks pose to both economic stability and human dignity.

Justice Kant called for systemic changes in how bail is handled for accusations involving these networks, advocating for a broader examination beyond individual complaints to tackle the scale and coordination of cybercriminal activities. He proposed temporarily pausing fund transfers to foreign accounts to allow for account verification, aiming to curtail cybercrime without hindering legitimate businesses.

Emphasizing the alarming rate at which cybercriminals siphon funds, Justice Kant suggested adopting victim-centric approaches and incorporating technological advancements in judicial training. He stressed the importance of enhancing institutional responses with speed, coordination, and empathy, especially towards vulnerable sectors of society, such as retirees and senior citizens, who are often prime targets of cyber frauds.
