A dedicated committee of presiding officers, organized by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, gathered to reevaluate the constitutional framework governing legislator disqualification under the anti-defection law. The second session of this assembly took place in Puri with four senior figures leading the charge.
Headed by Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the four-member committee was established in January 2020. Its objective is to examine the powers of presiding officers under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. Based on recent discussions, they aim to devise a comprehensive guideline for state legislature presiding officers.
The meeting underscored a commitment to fortify parliamentary democracy and enhance legislative institutions. Participants included senior Lok Sabha officials and constitutional experts. The committee plans to reconvene in Karnataka in two months to finalize its recommendations.
