In a high-stakes rescue operation, Russia's defence ministry reported the successful release of two captives, a Russian and a Ukrainian citizen, in Mali. The men had been abducted by a militant group in neighbouring Niger.
The operation was conducted by Russia's Africa Corps, a paramilitary force that took over from the notorious Wagner group. This mission underscores the group's ongoing presence and influence in several African countries, including Mali and Equatorial Guinea.
The captives, both employees of a Russian geological company, were taken in July 2024 by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, an affiliate of al Qaeda, and remained imprisoned until their dramatic rescue.
