Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, has hailed the unifying and transformative power of music, describing it as a vital force for social connection, healing and expression, during her address at the 2026 Masicule choral festival.

Speaking at the 13th edition of the annual event in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, Mhlauli said she was honoured to attend her first Masicule gathering and anticipated an experience that would leave her "moved, inspired, and uplifted".

Celebration of choral excellence

Masicule 2026 brought together more than 500 singers from some of the city's most renowned choirs, performing over two nights in a vibrant celebration of choral music and artistic collaboration.

The Deputy Minister reflected on the enduring role of music across societies, noting that it has historically preserved stories and collective memory, while also serving as a powerful tool for protest, resistance and social change.

"Music gives voice to suffering, struggles and hopes for a better future," she said, adding that its ability to transcend boundaries of age, gender and culture allows it to connect deeply with people from all walks of life.

Honouring South Africa's musical legacy

Mhlauli praised South Africa's rich musical heritage, describing the country's rhythm and musical expression as globally recognised.

She highlighted the legacy of celebrated artists who have graced the Masicule stage over the years, including the late Sibongile Khumalo, Vusi Mahlasela, Dumza Maswana and Zoë Modiga.

According to Mhlauli, their continued involvement underscores the importance of investing in music at all levels—from community initiatives and schools to universities and the professional arts sector.

"Supporting music is not a luxury, but a necessity that must be actively nurtured," she emphasised.

Resilience and renewal in Makhanda

Turning to the host city, Mhlauli acknowledged the socio-economic challenges facing Makhanda, but commended its spirit of resilience and cooperation.

She noted that the city's story is being reshaped through collective efforts by residents, organisations and institutions working together to build hope and create sustainable change.

Makhanda's strong cultural identity was also highlighted, with recognition given to its reputable schools, leading university, the internationally acclaimed National Arts Festival and its deep-rooted choral traditions.

Empowering young voices

Addressing the young performers participating in the festival, Mhlauli applauded their commitment and discipline, noting the months of rehearsal required to perform as a unified massed choir.

She remarked that many young people could have chosen less meaningful ways to spend their time, but instead dedicated themselves to music despite academic pressures.

The Deputy Minister also paid tribute to teachers and choir leaders, acknowledging their critical role in nurturing talent, instilling discipline and guiding young musicians.

Masicule, she concluded, stands as a powerful example of how music can bring communities together, inspire the next generation and contribute meaningfully to social development.
