A special court for MPs and MLAs has found Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni and 16 others guilty in the 2016 murder case of BJP leader Yogesh Goudar. The judgment came down on grounds of criminal conspiracy and related offenses, marking a significant legal outcome.
Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat ruled that the guilty were part of a criminal plan to murder Goudar, invoking several sections of the IPC. Additional charges included unlawful assembly, rioting, and murder, with specific charges under Section 302 read with Section 120(B). For several accused, charges of evidence tampering were added.
Two defendants were acquitted due to insufficient evidence. The court also directed potential perjury proceedings against several witnesses, including police, and allowed the prosecution to consider further action against a hostile witness. Following conviction, Kulkarni, previously released on bail, was taken into custody and transported to Bengaluru Central Jail. His political career is now uncertain, pending potential disqualification.
