Allahabad High Court Targets Growing Gun Culture in UP

The Allahabad High Court has demanded comprehensive data on arms licences issued in Uttar Pradesh, citing a growing 'gun culture' in the state. Justice Vinod Diwakar, addressing the issue, criticized the use of licensed firearms by those with political or dubious backgrounds to assert dominance and create fear.

The court took particular exception to the display of firearms on social media, such as Instagram reels, calling it a ploy for attention and social validation. This behavior, the court remarked, undermines confidence in legal institutions and fosters a culture of fear rather than adherence to law.

The court directed the state's additional chief secretary (Home) to clarify if a database for arms licenses exists and explain the arms policy guiding licensing decisions. District magistrates across Uttar Pradesh must provide detailed data on firearm possession, particularly focusing on families with multiple licencesto and applicants with criminal histories.
