The Commerce and Industry Ministry is urging various departments to withdraw pending court cases related to minor offences, coinciding with the recent passage of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026. This move is directed at lightening the judiciary's load and fostering an improved business atmosphere.
According to a senior official, the newly enacted bill amends 784 provisions within 79 central laws, facilitating the decriminalization and rationalization of nearly 1,000 minor offences. The initiative seeks to diminish bureaucratic hurdles and curb unnecessary harassment of individuals and businesses. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted that many of the five crore pending court cases should not have reached the judicial system.
The bill's approval marks a significant step towards national legal reform, promising considerable economic relief. Goyal noted that twelve states have begun implementing their own versions of the bill, with the ministry encouraging further state-level actions to decriminalize minor offences.
