In a major push to position India as a global hub for niche tourism and sports-led development, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat attended the official launch of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) in New Delhi, unveiling a transformative initiative aimed at reshaping India's tourism landscape.

The IGPL launch marks a strategic convergence of sports, tourism, and infrastructure development, aligned with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

$2 Billion Investment to Transform Golf Tourism

A key highlight of the initiative is IGPL's commitment to mobilise an estimated USD 2 billion investment for developing world-class golf tourism infrastructure across India.

This investment is expected to:

  • Develop integrated golf tourism destinations

  • Build modern golf facilities in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities

  • Strengthen hospitality and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) infrastructure

  • Attract high-value international tourists and investors

The initiative aims to create a sustainable ecosystem combining sporting excellence with tourism-driven economic growth.

Strategic Push for High-Value Tourism

Addressing the gathering, Shri Shekhawat described IGPL as more than a sporting venture:

"This is not merely a sporting initiative—it is a strategic investment in Brand India. Golf tourism globally attracts high-value visitors and drives long-term economic growth."

Globally, golf tourism is recognised as a premium niche segment, attracting affluent travellers who:

  • Spend significantly more than average tourists

  • Stay longer at destinations

  • Contribute to multiple sectors including hospitality, real estate, and services

India's Competitive Advantage

With its diverse landscapes, favourable climate, and growing infrastructure, India is well-positioned to emerge as a competitive golf tourism destination.

The IGPL initiative will leverage these strengths to:

  • Expand tourism beyond traditional hotspots

  • Promote lesser-known destinations

  • Enhance India's visibility in global tourism markets

Boost to Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities

A key focus of the IGPL model is decentralised tourism development, bringing high-value tourism opportunities to emerging cities.

This is expected to:

  • Generate local employment

  • Stimulate regional economies

  • Encourage private investment in infrastructure

  • Promote balanced tourism growth across states

Aligning with Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision

The Minister emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Prime Minister's vision of building world-class infrastructure that attracts global investment and creates jobs.

The integration of sports and tourism represents a forward-looking development model, positioning India as a multi-dimensional global destination.

Government's Focus on Niche Tourism Segments

The Ministry of Tourism is actively promoting niche segments such as:

  • Golf tourism

  • MICE tourism

  • Adventure and eco-tourism

  • Cultural and heritage tourism

These efforts are supported through:

  • Thematic tourism circuits

  • Global outreach under the Incredible India campaign

  • Participation in international travel marts

  • Digital promotion via the Incredible India Digital Platform

The Ministry is also working closely with state governments and industry stakeholders to build high-value tourism products and will explore synergies with IGPL to accelerate infrastructure development.

Economic and Strategic Impact

The IGPL initiative is expected to:

  • Enhance India's global tourism competitiveness

  • Attract foreign direct investment (FDI)

  • Strengthen the hospitality and services sector

  • Position India as a premium sports tourism destination

A New Frontier in Tourism Growth

As India seeks to diversify its tourism offerings and move up the value chain, golf tourism presents a significant opportunity to tap into a high-spending global audience.

The launch of IGPL signals a decisive step in that direction—combining infrastructure, investment, and innovation to redefine India's tourism narrative.
