eThekwini Deploys Over 1,000 Officers, Ramps Up Safety Measures for Easter Holiday Surge

The eThekwini Municipality has launched a comprehensive, multi-agency safety operation ahead of the Easter holiday, placing public safety at the forefront as thousands of residents, tourists, and churchgoers are expected to move across the city.

Mayor Cyril Xaba announced that the city has activated an integrated law enforcement plan, bringing together Metro Police, the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security, the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate, Home Affairs, and Customs to ensure a coordinated response.

Massive Safety Deployment Across Key Hotspots

At the heart of the plan is the deployment of more than 1,000 officers, who will maintain 24-hour patrols across high-traffic areas, including:

• Beaches and coastal zones

• Entertainment districts

• Major transport routes and freeways

• Shopping centres and tourism sites

"Over 20 multidisciplinary roadblocks will be conducted during this period, focusing on all forms of crime, including drinking and driving," Xaba said.

Authorities will also intensify freeway patrols to improve pedestrian safety and clamp down on unsafe public transport, including the removal of unroadworthy vehicles.

Focus on Religious Gatherings and Public Events

With Easter being one of the busiest periods for religious activity, law enforcement agencies will closely monitor church services and large gatherings across the municipality.

A major Good Friday service, hosted in partnership with the Diakonia Council of Churches, is expected to draw large crowds, with police assigned to:

• Crowd control and safety management

• Traffic regulation around venues

• Rapid response to emergencies

In addition, safety awareness campaigns will be conducted at taxi ranks in collaboration with the transport sector to promote responsible travel.

Beaches Declared Safe Following R1.2 Billion Investment

In a major boost for tourism and public confidence, the municipality confirmed that all 23 bathing beaches are open and safe for swimming.

This follows a significant R1.2 billion investment in sanitation infrastructure, including:

• Upgrades to sewer networks

• Modernisation of pump stations

• Improvements to wastewater treatment facilities

These upgrades are aimed at reducing pollution and preventing contamination of rivers and coastal waters—an issue that has historically impacted Durban's tourism sector.

To maintain safety standards, the city has intensified weekly water quality testing, with results shared publicly to ensure transparency.

Lifeguard Deployment and Public Safety Measures

To safeguard beachgoers, the municipality will deploy 200 lifeguards daily from 6am to 6pm along the coastline.

Authorities have urged visitors to:

• Swim only in designated areas

• Follow lifeguard instructions

• Avoid swimming under the influence of alcohol

These measures are designed to reduce drowning incidents and ensure a safe recreational environment during the peak holiday period.

Water Supply Stabilised Ahead of Increased Demand

Despite the expected surge in demand, the municipality has assured residents and visitors of a stable and reliable water supply throughout the Easter period.

Recent repairs to the Nagle Dam aqueduct system have restored normal flow levels to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, a critical supply point for the city.

Officials also confirmed that the planned Southern Aqueduct shutdown for pipeline upgrades will not disrupt water availability during the holidays.

The Easter safety plan reflects a broader shift toward integrated urban management, combining law enforcement, infrastructure readiness, and public communication to manage peak periods effectively.

"Our priority is to ensure a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable Easter for all. We call on residents and visitors to work with law enforcement and act responsibly," he said.
