In a recent session of the Lok Sabha, the government addressed queries regarding the installation of pre-paid electricity meters. During the Question Hour, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar clarified that consumers are not required to install these meters as had been speculated.

The minister dismissed claims suggesting that the government was coercing consumers into adopting pre-paid meters, unlike private companies. He further explained that while the standard consumer can choose not to opt for pre-paid meters, serial defaulters might be compelled to do so to curb non-payment risks.

To alleviate concerns among farmers, who often manage finances on a day-to-day basis, Khattar highlighted the availability of small recharge options, catering to low-income demographics. However, he emphasized the necessity for power companies to earn revenue, given their commercial nature, to continue providing electricity.
