In Malda district, West Bengal, tensions heightened as seven judicial officers, part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), were trapped by protesters angered over the deletion of names from electoral rolls.
The insecurity prompted them to besiege the officers for hours, resulting in a dramatic late-night rescue by security forces who used batons to disperse the crowd.
The unrest, centered on allegations of large-scale voter name deletions, led to a blockade on National Highway 12. An Additional District Magistrate's assurances eventually defused the situation.
