The introduction of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, has sparked heated debate within the Indian political arena. On Wednesday, the BJP stood firm in support of the bill, asserting it is necessary for bolstering national security and improving transparency.
In contrast, opposition parties, led prominently by the Congress, have rebuked the bill as a strategic tool to curb minority rights and exert greater control over NGOs. Congress MP Manish Tewari deemed the amendments unconstitutional and infringing on articles of the Constitution.
BJP MPs argue the bill addresses misuse of foreign funds for protests and misinformation. However, the opposition demands the bill's withdrawal, leading to protests and claims that the bill could undermine democratic processes and institutions.
