In a decisive move to tackle the illicit liquor trade, Karnataka's Excise Minister R B Timmapur declared plans to enact new stringent laws in the state. These measures target individuals involved in the unlawful sale of Chloral hydrate powder, a substance often used to produce illegal liquor.

The Minister emphasized the need for these stringent actions during an Assembly session, explaining that for decades, no new legislation has been implemented to address these pressing issues. With a committee helmed by retired IAS officer K P Krishnan, the government aims to enforce strict regulations.

Additionally, Timmapur noted that efforts by the Excise and Police departments are ongoing to curtail these activities, advocating for the inclusion of Chloral hydrate powder under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The state plans to recommend this change to the central government, reinforcing its resolve to manage illegal liquor production effectively.
