The Iranian women's soccer team has made an unexpected return to Iran via Istanbul, following a brief stay in Malaysia. This development comes after five players decided to retract their asylum claims in Australia.
The initial asylum requests were rooted in fears of persecution after some team members failed to perform the national anthem during a recent women's Asian Cup match. While six players and a support staff member were originally granted humanitarian visas, only two players remain in Australia at present.
The team was temporarily stationed in Kuala Lumpur and reassembled there before continuing their journey back home. The group's Asian Cup journey coincided with geopolitical tensions, including strikes in Iran. Their campaign ended over a week ago with their elimination from the tournament.
