EU Welcomes Potential UK Return to Single Market
The European Union would welcome the UK back to the single market if it chooses to rejoin, expressed French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot. This follows UK's openness to align with EU business rules. The Labour government, however, remains opposed to rejoining the single market or customs union.
The European Union has extended an expression of openness toward Britain, should the country decide to re-enter the bloc's single market. French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot conveyed this sentiment on Tuesday during an event in Berlin, emphasizing a warm welcome for the UK.
The remarks came shortly after Britain's finance minister, Rachel Reeves, indicated the country's willingness to align with many EU business regulations to stimulate economic growth. Barrot noted that the UK is contemplating a significant shift in its post-Brexit approach.
Despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government acknowledging the economic drawbacks of Brexit, they have dismissed the notion of rejoining the single market or forming a customs union, marking a significant stance since the country's departure in 2020.
