V Senthil Balaji, a member of the DMK and sitting MLA from Karur, faced intense scrutiny as he appeared before the CBI this Tuesday. He was questioned regarding a tragic stampede that unfolded during a political rally by TVK chief, Vijay, in the town of Karur last year.
Initially investigated by an SIT, the case was transferred to the CBI following an order from the Supreme Court. The horrific event on September 27, 2025, claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 others. In the aftermath, the apex court had appointed a senior officer to head the investigation.
A supervisory committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi, was constituted to oversee the probe. The incident, remarking on the wide-reaching implications and loss of life, reiterated the need for an unbiased and independent investigation to rebuild the public's trust in the criminal justice system.
