Tensions Flare in Meghalaya: Two Killed Amid Electoral Protest

Tensions escalated in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, as two civilians were fatally shot by security forces during clashes over the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council election nominations. Officials reported the dispute occurred early Tuesday between tribal and non-tribal groups in the Chibinang area.

Authorities imposed a curfew and temporarily suspended mobile internet services amid fears of escalating violence, following the violent outbreak concerning non-tribal candidacies. Superintendent Abraham T Sangma confirmed that curbs were necessary to control the unrest between rival groups.

The district has sought additional security support, including a flag march by Army forces, to reassure the public and maintain order as the nomination deadline for the election approaches. A peace committee meeting is scheduled to address the ongoing disputes and seek a peaceful resolution.
