Explosion Rocks U.S. Embassy in Oslo Amid Middle East Tensions
A loud explosion hit the U.S. Embassy in Oslo early on Sunday, causing minor damage with no injuries. Linked to Middle East tensions, Norwegian police are investigating it as a possible deliberate attack or terrorism. Oslo and U.S. officials are closely cooperating in the ongoing investigation.
The U.S. embassy in Oslo suffered a loud explosion early Sunday morning, resulting in minor but concerning damage, Norwegian police confirmed. Authorities suspect the incident might be linked to Middle East tensions, as head of Oslo police investigations, Frode Larsen, suggested the attack could have been deliberate during a news conference.
At present, no suspects have been identified. Oslo police are actively searching for one or more perpetrators and maintaining close cooperation with the U.S. embassy. 'One of our hypotheses is that this is terrorism,' Larsen told public broadcaster NRK, while not ruling out other possibilities.
Taking place at 1 a.m. (0000 GMT), the blast sent thick smoke billowing onto the streets from the consular section's entrance, witnesses reported. With no further explosive devices found, Norwegian and U.S. authorities, including Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, assured diplomatic missions' security remains a high priority.
