The Uttar Pradesh Assembly marked a pivotal moment on Tuesday by approving amendments designed to eliminate the term 'Kushtashram' from municipal regulations. This legislative change targets the lingering stigma against individuals affected by leprosy, aiming to provide them with dignity and respect in the community.

The Bills were passed during the seventh day of the budget session, with Urban Development Minister A K Sharma introducing the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Uttar Pradesh Municipality (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Opposition members, including Samajwadi Party representatives, suggested further examination, arguing that changing terminology alone might not fully address discrimination.

Despite the opposition's push for evaluation through a select committee, the legislation passed with substantial backing from the treasury benches. The measures, initially enacted via ordinance in February 2026, demonstrate a commitment to challenging societal biases and ensuring fair treatment for leprosy patients.
