McLaughlin has been a vocal supporter of Trump's immigration enforcement measures but has faced increased scrutiny over the agency's handling of reports involving federal immigration officers. Conservative commentator Katie Zacharia has been named as her replacement, stepping in during a turbulent period for the department.
Plans for McLaughlin's exit had been in place since December, as public opinion soured following controversial incidents and remarks by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Meanwhile, Democrats have initiated impeachment proceedings against Noem, citing a breach of public trust and obstructed oversight.
