The Central Information Commission (CIC) has mandated the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to proactively disclose information about illegal encroachments. This directive comes as such information is frequently requested by citizens under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
In a recent order concerning alleged illegal encroachments in Delhi's Paharganj area, the CIC emphasized the need for transparency. It stated that making encroachment-related information readily available can substantially improve transparency and reduce the number of RTI applications filed on the matter.
The commission noted a failure in responding to an RTI application submitted in May 2024, highlighting the need for careful handling by public information officers. The CIC has given the MCD a four-week deadline to disclose encroachment information, action reports, and relevant policies in the public domain.
