Silence on Sabarimala: Opposition Demands Clarity from Kerala Government

In a heated statement on Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala State Assembly, V D Satheesan, launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for his silence regarding the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple. Addressing reporters, Satheesan demanded a clear response from the Left government on whether it supports women's entry into the sacred shrine, a debate that has deeply divided the state.

The issue has surged back into the spotlight as the Supreme Court announced that a nine-judge bench would soon deliberate on petitions concerning women's rights in religious contexts, including Sabarimala. Despite previous backing for the entry, the Left government now faces mounting pressure from Hindu organizations, Congress, and the BJP to clarify its position before the upcoming elections.

Responding to the criticism, State Law Minister P Rajeev expressed that the matter's intricacies extend beyond a simple 'yes or no' response, noting that the Supreme Court's review involves complex constitutional considerations. The government remains cautious in committing to a stance, indicating further deliberations are necessary before finalizing its affidavit for the apex court.
