Philippine Congress Deliberates on Impeachment Complaints Against President Marcos Jr.
Philippine lawmakers are assessing impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., accused of corruption and constitutional violations. Decisions on moving forward hinge on substance evaluation by the House justice committee. If advanced, the process proceeds to a vote dominated by Marcos allies.
Philippine legislators convened on Tuesday to deliberate on whether impeachment cases against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should proceed. Marcos faces accusations of betraying the public's trust, corruption, and constitutional violations, charges he denies. Two complaints were validated in form by the House justice committee.
The committee reconvened to evaluate the substance of the complaints, which, if approved, will be put to a vote in the lower house, where Marcos maintains strong support. The accusations include allowing ex-president Duterte's extradition for ICC trial regarding drug war deaths and misuse of public funds.
Should the lower house endorse the impeachment, it will advance to the Senate for a trial. Historically, five Philippine officials have faced impeachment, with only one conviction. The outcome will hinge on whether the wrongdoing constitutes an impeachable offense, as expressed by justice committee head Gerville Luistro.
