CISF Takes Charge of Bhakra Dam Security Amidst Tensions

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has officially assumed security control of the Bhakra Dam project, located at the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant shift in the security protocol for this critical infrastructure.

This change, prompted by increasing threats of sabotage and terrorism, sees the withdrawal of state police forces, who have been relegated to support roles under the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The newly deployed CISF unit, consisting of 296 armed personnel, will now oversee the dam’s security, focusing on sensitive areas such as dam walls, water gates, and power stations.

However, this move hasn't come without controversy. The decision by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy the CISF was met with opposition from the AAP government in Punjab, which passed a resolution against the decision in July. Despite the protest, the transition proceeded, indicating the Centre's resolve to enhance security at the high-risk site.
