The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant the Delhi Police a two-week window to file its response regarding bail applications submitted by activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others linked to the alleged 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy under the UAPA.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the police, asked for more time, but Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria dismissed this request, scheduling a hearing for October 31. The justices highlighted that there is little need for counter filing in bail matters.
The activists have been in custody since 2020, contesting allegations of orchestrating riots amidst protests against controversial citizenship laws. The Delhi High Court previously rejected their bail requests, emphasizing the right to protest must adhere to legal boundaries.
